A Magical Holiday Experience

In 2024, the Austin Trail of Lights is celebrating its 60th year, transforming Zilker Park into a winter wonderland from December 10th through December 23rd. This tradition brings joy to all, featuring over 2 million lights, 96 trees aglow, and 70 magical displays and tunnels. The event has become one of the cornerstones in Austin's holiday celebrations, with visitors coming from Texas and elsewhere.

Operating Hours and Access

The main gates are open nightly from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM. If one desires early access, the ZIP Pass holders get in at 6:00 PM-an entire hour ahead of the crowd. Sparkly Maid Austin suggests that the best time to visit is during the week to avoid the biggest crowds and have more of a relaxed experience. The trail is laid out in such a manner that the flow is relatively smooth, even on nights when the park is at its busiest.

Ticket Options and Free Nights

The Trail of Lights has the following admission options: General Admission: General admission is free on seven nights: December 10-13 and December 16-18. Other nights, general admission tickets are $8 for visitors 12 and above, and kids under 12 always get in free. Group Rates: Groups of 25 or more can get group rates-a very popular option for school groups and corporate events.

Premium Experiences

Want an added a boost to your experience? Get early entry, get a special entrance, get into the ZIP Lounge-- complete with free cookies and hot cocoa-- with the $25 ZIP Pass program. If you're one of those who will brave the trail, be sure you schedule a move out cleaning so you come home to a clean house. Enjoy perks like valet parking and premium viewing areas if you opt for the Platinum Pass.

2024 Special Features

This year's celebration started with something that has never been seen: a drone show where 200 drones created shapes and messages in the sky for holiday shapes and messages. The choreographed 5-minute spectacle marked a historic first for the Trail of Lights, adding a modern twist to this traditional event. The show includes intricate formations depicting holiday icons and Austin landmarks.

Transportation and Parking

Parking at Zilker Park is available by pre-purchased passes only; no on-site sales are available. Shuttle services run from Toney Burger Center for $8 per person, which includes general admission to the trail. Public transportation options include bus routes 3, 30, and 803. Ride-sharing services have designated drop-off and pick-up zones for easy convenience.

Music and Live Entertainments

The trail has several entertainment zones with regional musicians who play the classic holidays and new compositions as well. Main stage nightly performances, combined with roamers, enable magic within a part of the path. Special theme nights include everything from classical music up to the contemporary holiday numbers.

Food and Refreshments

Visitors will also enjoy many local food vendors offering a variety of treats from classic holiday to Austin's famed food truck cuisine. ZIP Lounge offers complimentary refreshments to pass holders, plus hot chocolate, seasonal beverages, and festive snacks are available throughout the trail at various stops. Local restaurants showcase their specialties at designated food courts.

Community Impact

The Trail of Lights Foundation continues to give back to the community with the STARS at the Trail program, providing free access to over 20,000 community members each year. The event creates a serious economic impact on Austin and keeps its mission alive-once accessible, always accessible, and inclusive. Sparkly Maid Austin proudly supports events that put smiles on our community's faces.

Weather Considerations and Accessibility

This trail is taken rain or shine, with contingency plans in case of extreme weather. Paved pathways accommodate wheelchairs and strollers, while rest areas provide comfortable spots to take breaks. The ADA Accessibility Center ensures all visitors enjoy this magical experience in comfort.

Planning Your Visit

To maximize your experience, come early and in comfortable walking shoes. Cash is recommended for vendors and some activities. The illuminated trail itself-one mile long-usually takes 45-60 minutes to complete, although many people spend much more time enjoying the displays and other activities, such as photos with Santa, a carousel, and Ferris wheel. For this year, new will be the Zilker Eagle Train, which provides special holiday hours of operation from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM during the event.

The Trail of Lights in Austin is one of those holiday events that perfectly mingles tradition and innovation to create an experience that none would ever forget. First-time visitors, or a continuation of the family tradition, the celebration this year promises to be the most spectacular.
