Austin’s Hidden Waterfalls and Natural Springs

Nothing feels better when it is hot outside than some cool water splashing on the body. Austin has loads of awesome spots outdoors to swim in, hike at, and generally hang out in with friends and family. But did you know there are secret waterfalls and natural springs hiding somewhere in this city?

These are not just regular pools. They're surrounded by nature, so you'll be hearing birds, seeing trees, and super relaxed. I'm going to share with you three of my favorite spots to visit. So, grab your swimsuit, some snacks, and let's go explore!

1. Sculpture Falls

Sculpture Falls is a hidden gem tucked away in the Barton Creek Greenbelt. You need to hike about two miles to get there, but it’s a fun trail with lots of trees and shade. When you finally arrive, you’ll see a beautiful swimming area with clear, cool water.

Why it's awesome: It feels like your own secret swimming spot. The water is perfect for cooling off, and it's not as crowded as some of the other places in Austin.

Bring: Water to drink, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes to hike in. And don't forget to take all of your trash with you when you leave-lets leave it nice and clean!

Fun fact: The Greenbelt has so many more spots to hike and explore-you can continue an adventure if time allows!

2. Krause Springs

Krause Springs is about 30 miles outside of Austin, but it is totally worth the drive. It's like a natural wonderland! It has 32 natural springs, a waterfall, and even a big pool that's fed by the springs. The water is cool all year, so it's great even on the hottest summer day.

Why it's awesome: The Krause Springs have everything from waterfalls and high trees to give it all the feel-good vibes; no doubt, the feel is just magical here. You even can camp in these grounds overnight.

What to bring: Bring along a picnic, a towel, and maybe even a camera because it is so nice here that you will want pictures.

Pro Tip: The gardens at Krause Springs are really cool to walk around in. Don't miss them while you're there!

3. Bull Creek District Park

If you want to stay in closer proximity to Austin, check out Bull Creek District Park. You'll find shallow spots to swim and small waterfalls, cool trails to explore. The water is so family-friendly for kids to be playing in.

Why it's great: You won't have to drive too far to get here, and there is plenty of space to stretch out and relax. Plus, dogs are welcome, so bring your furry friend along!

To bring along: Sunscreen, a picnic blanket, and perhaps a book to read as you sit by the water.

Fun fact: The best times to visit are early mornings; you will miss the crowds, and the soft sounds of nature will be there.
